Sheffield Design Week

Made North present the inaugural Sheffield Design Week in June 2014, it will be a citywide celebration of design in all its forms. Sheffield Design Week is a collaborative platform aiming to increase awareness and appreciation of design and develop new audiences. It will offer both cultural and commercial opportunities, showcasing established and emerging design talent and innovative projects. The identity for this year’s event was created by The Designers Republic.

After curating and programming design events across the north, I wanted to create an annual, fixed celebration of design in our home city. . .

Sheffield is a creative city…7.2 percent of its workforce work in creative industries, well above the four percent national average. It also has the largest number of creative workspaces and artist studios outside London, so it has the foundations to build a great international design week.

(Patrick Murphy, director of Sheffield gallery Made North)

Key events include:

Made North Conference – ‘Can Design Save the World?
A key event during the Design Week, drawing together speakers and delegates from across design, craft and manufacturing to explore a core theme of ‘Can Design Save the World?’.

Sheffield Design & Architecture Film Festival
This event will see screenings of a selection of international design and architecture focused film alongside designer and architect led talks.

Design Trail
At the heart of Sheffield Design Week is the Design Trail a printed and online guide which will take visitors through the city and the wider region via a range workshops, open studios, exhibitions, places of interest and related events explaining and exploring design and making.

Our ‘must see’ selection:

Sheffield Print Fair – The 5-Day Print Challenge
Working in partnership with the Graphic Design / Illustration department at Sheffield Hallam University they are setting a challenge for four professional artists/printmakers and four students to produce a finished work of art in five days, we can’t wait to see the results!

Yorkshire in Yellow
As Yorkshire counts down to the Grand Départ of the Tour de France this summer, the Millennium Gallery is set to debut a major new display inspired by the Tour’s most iconic symbol. Yorkshire in Yellow will see over 60 t-shirt designs, which range from simple drawings to complex illustrations, suspended from the ceiling of the Millennium Gallery’s main thoroughfare.

How would you feel about carrying your home in your pocket or having clothes to live in? In an age of increasing population and technological gains, today’s mobile society has resulted in a demand, or perhaps a dream, for portable dwellings and dwellings in new settings and situations.
